Trusting the Business Method - preview
Many years ago, the theme of a New Year gathering of Young Friends was 'Belief is not what you assert, but what you act upon' We assert a good deal about the Quaker Business Method: to quote from Quaker faith & practice 302, 'Our Meetings for Church Affairs, in which we conduct our business, are also Meetings for Worship based on silence, and they carry the same expectation that God's guidance can be discerned if we are truly listening together and to each other, and are not blinkered by preconceived opinions' The claim that we can find the guidance of God rather than a conglomeration of our own personal opinions is an extravagant, almost ridiculous one: but it is true to Friends' experience through our history because we have always been willing to come with hearts and minds prepared but not made up
