UK and US meet in Hearts and Minds - preview
It's Thursday 2 March
  • Jennie Levin and I are in an aircraft cabin as big as a ship, a sea of unchanging clouds just about visible
  • My TV monitor shows a map of the Atlantic with a tiny toy aeroplane creeping across it, now on a curve over Ireland and heading for Greenland
  • Most people while away the seven-hour journey watching movies, but this is my first long-haul flight
  • I stick with the toy aeroplane – all the way

  • We're heading for Philadelphia on behalf of Woodbrooke to help set up a pilot programme of Hearts and Minds Prepared with the Religious Education Committee of Friends General Conference
  • FGC is an umbrella organisation of fourteen Yearly Meetings, 800 Monthly (local) Meetings, in the US unprogrammed tradition of Friends
  • The logistics of scale and geography are hard to grasp from our UK perspective, so we'll be there to learn as well as to pass on the experience of two and a half years of H&MP in Britain
  • Will the course find a good fit in America? Our purpose isn't to assess that but to help kick-start the process by which FGC will evaluate its usefulness for themselves

  • Zélie Gross
